Weak passwords and phishing attacks are making things easier for the criminals to break into most organisations. This has a higher success rate than software vulnerabilities.
A study has been carried out by Praetorian who are a cybersecurity firm. Their study was based off 100 penetration tests and 450 real attacks. The results were that credentials that had been stolen offered the best way into networks. Software vulnerabilities didn’t make it into their top five.
Amongst the top five there was, weak domain user passwords, local administrator attacks, insufficient network access controls and also clear text passwords that were stored in the memory. 97 % of businesses and organisations have more than one of the issues listed above, which is very bad.
