WannaCrypt victims forked out $140k+

It has been reported recently that the victims of the WannaCrypt ransomware attacks back in May have parted with more than $140,000 (£105,000). The money that was taken was removed from online wallets yesterday at 4am.

This major outbreak swept across 74 countries and left the UK’s NHS turning patients away as a result of the lockdown. Many other organisations were victims of this terrible attack some of these include FedEx, rail stations, universities and a Spanish national.

Businesses were left in ruins as all their files were encrypted and unusable. Many businesses had to close their doors that day due to this outbreak, which should have been avoidable. The hackers were asking for a ransom to release encrypted files; the amount they were asking for was $300-$600.

The one major lesson that businesses should have learnt that day was to make sure that there is a working backup for the network. The victims that paid the ransom sadly didn’t get their files back and were then out of pocket.
