UK National Lottery involved in a data breach!
It appears that cyber criminals have been using email addresses and passwords from other attacks to gain access to 26,000 online UK National Lottery accounts. Camelot who are the company behind the National Lottery, detected the scams and they also detected the attempted frauds. They have responded to these attacks by locking down accounts and also setting password resets. The owners of the accounts that have been compromised are being contacted directly.
It has been reported that 26,500 accounts have been compromised but Camelot thinks that less than 50 have been used for suspicious activity. Camelot have said that systems and databases haven’t been breached, and that no money has been deposited or withdrawn from the accounts. They are working closely with the National Crime Agency and the National Cyber Security Centre over criminal access to their systems.
This sort of attack mainly depends on end users using the same information for multiple sites, users need to be aware of the dangers of using the same passwords for multiple accounts.
