Russian man jailed over Ebury botnet!
It has been reported that a Russian man has been sentenced to 46 months in prison, after he admitted using the Ebury malware to create a botnet for fun and profit. Maxim Senakh aged 41 from Novgorog, Russia was jailed in Minnesota after he pleaded guilty. The crimes he pleaded guilty to were conspiracy to commit wire fraud and violating the computer fraud and abuse act. Maxim was arrested whilst on a visit to Finland then extradited to the US.
Ebury is a piece of malware that harvests login credentials and is specifically designed to run on FreeBSD, Solaris systems and Linux. Maxim and his associates used this information to create a botnet army full of infected systems, there were tens of thousands of machines in this botnet. Maxim and his associates made millions out of this scam, they ran spam campaigns and advertised click fraud.
