Police close 28k counterfeit websites!
It has been reported by the Police’s Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) that they have closed down 28,000 websites selling counterfeit goods. These figures are based on information over the last 3 years, these websites sell everything from football strips to trainers and t-shirts.
Out of the 28,000 that were closed down by police 4,000 were registered using stolen identities, 400 people have had their identity stolen and used for setting up criminal websites. Identity theft is one of the main issues and worries of using these criminal sites and social media online.
If you ever try to purchase anything from these website 9 times out of 10 you will need to create an account to use their website. When you create an account you will normally part with sensitive and confidential information, this includes name, address, contact information and also financial information. The criminals will then use this information to create counterfeit or criminal sites in your name using the details you provided.
Websites like this can affect people’s credit scores and It can have a massive impact on them getting any type of credit in the future. It has been reported that it can often take upto 300 hours for people’s identities to be fully regained.
