New Ransomware threat 'WannaCry' spreads rapidly across the globe!
Late on 12/05/17 a new Ransomware threat emerged called WannaCry. The new virus is a Ransom.CrypXXX strain of ransomware which encrypts your files and charges you a fee to get the data back. It has spread across the globe rapidly and demands $300 to $600 in Bitcoin to be paid quickly per encrypted folder, with the price rising if you leave it too long. If you havent already done so you should install MS17-010 immediately to patch your machine against one of the holes this virus uses to spread. You should also be vigilant and not click attachments or web links in emails that you are not expecting whilst the antivirus and security vendors get to a full list of fixes out. If you are unlucky enough to get encrypted then turn off your machine immediately and unplug it from the network, whether this is at home or work then get in touch with the experts at ITWiser to help restore from backup.
ITWiser recommend Cyber Essentials Plus to all businesses from 1 user through to 500 users. The Cyber Essentials process helps businesses prevent these threats by ensuring that the machines are patched and up to date and that several levels of protection are in place. To find out more about the government backed Cyber Essentials scheme get in touch with the IT Security experts at ITWiser.
