The Metropolitan Police have suffered what the ICO are classifying as a serious "data breach". This involved a member of staff handing over the details of 30,000 registered gun owners in London to a marketing agency. It is unclear why this happened but shortly afterwards the 30,000 gun owners were getting sent junk mail by the marketing agency to sell them Smart Water to help protect their guns from theft. The attack may have been caused by social engineering where befriending and goodwill are used against someone to steal valuable information.
It is now more important than ever to keep staff trained up to spot social engineering and to react accordingly. ITWiser can help with this through the IASME Standard & GDPR certification processes. Get in touch with ITWiser today to find out more.
