How Malware Works and How Cloud Web Security Works to Prevent It

Of all the issues faced by online businesses today, malware is by far the biggest. With more than 700 million websites online and active, cybercriminals have never had a greater platform from which to work, and malware is their weapon of choice – easily disguisable and extremely effective. If you rely on the internet for any aspect of your operations, malware is always going to be a threat. However, by understanding how it works and how Cloud Web Security prevents it, you can work online without fear.

The Five Stages of Malware

Like the internet, malware is forever growing and evolving. Hackers are constantly introducing more complex viruses into the wild, but the ways in which they are implementing them rarely vary – why fix something that isn’t broken, right?

A typical malware infection works in five stages, as are brilliantly described in this blog post by Sophos’ John Zorabedian.

The first stage is entry, whereby the malware finds its way on to a platform. In almost every case, this will happen due to human interaction from drive-by downloads or emails containing malicious links.

Stage two is distribution, where the malware redirects the user’s browser to a malicious website, based on browser and operating system. Stage three is exploitation and this is where things really begin to get serious. Exploitation involves a kit probing the user’s system for vulnerabilities.

The fourth stage is infection. This is when a malicious payload is downloaded onto the user’s system. The final stage, execution, is the most devastating to a business. This is the point where the malware has taken hold of a system and uses a command and control server to transmit sensitive data to the hacker, or attempts to extort the victim through ransomware, as has been successfully demonstrated with the recent CryptoLocker virus.

How Cloud Web Security Prevents Malware

With the internet acting as the driving force behind modern business, it is essential that you do everything in your power to stay safe from the threat of malware. Cloud Web Security helps you do this on a number of levels.

As the list of features here shows, Cloud Web Security is as comprehensive a security measure as you’ll find. Not only does it detect and block malware at cloud level (before it reaches the network) with antivirus, antiphishing and antimalware solutions, it also works to protect users through detailed policies, URL content filtering, and ad blocking – effectively bubble-wrapping employees and shielding them from online dangers.

While there will never be a way to rid the internet of malware, Cloud Web Security will prevent you from ever becoming a victim of its devastation.
