Hit by ransomware 21 times in one year!
Ransomware has hit Universities and NHS trusts in England hard over the last 12 months. This was according to freedom of information requests which were done by two cybersecurity firms. Bournemouth University which has a cybersecurity centre has been infected 21 times in the past year. Also 28 NHS Trusts have been affected aswell over the last year.
Ransomware is a form of malware that encrypts files then demands payment from them to be released. Ransomware can hide in downloadable files and programmes or travel in emails.
SentinelOne who are a cybersecurity firm contacted 71 UK universities. Out of 58 universities which replied 23 admitted they had been attacked in the last year. Out of the 23 which had been infected only 1 contacted the police, but none of them payed the ransom.
