Hackers target banks around the world!
It has been reported that hackers are directly attacking banks around the world using a trojan called Silence. It has been reported that at least 10 financial organisations in multiple countries have been affected by this trojan, these counties include Russia, Malaysia and Armenia.
According to Kaspersky Lab, Whilst the hackers steal funds from their victims, the Silence trojan runs similar techniques to the known Carbanak crew. The 2 organised groups work similarly; they gain access into the internal banking networks and lie in wait for a long time. In the time they wait they will be monitoring the day-to-day activity and examine each bank separately. Once the hackers are happy that the time is right they will then strike and steal as much money as possible. The amount of money that has been taken by the group isn’t known but it is expected to go into the millions.
The Silence attacks normally start with spear phishing emails, if these attacks are successful it will plant a backdoor into the user’s PC. Once the hackers are in they will then interrogate further and try create more backdoors internally.
