It has been revealed that hackers have installed a skimming script on more than 6000 online stores. Hundreds of thousands of cards could have been affected during this massive operation. The hackers are adding to the list daily; each day they add another 85 websites that have the script installed.
A dutch developer called Willem de Groot found that stores running vulnerable versions of the Magento ecommerce platform, were been infected by the malware. The script that the hackers uploaded to the websites, captures and ships the credit card information from online shops to Russia based command and control servers.
De Groot has said that the attack started in March and lasted 6 months, he says in an educated guess that roughly some 21,000 cards would have been skimmed.
