CCleaner targeted top tech firms!
It has been reported by security researchers that the purpose of the infected version of CCleaner is to create secondary attacks. The version of CCleaner riddled with malware was handed out by Avast, the purpose of the secondary attacks was to penetrate the technology companies.
The malware that managed to find its way into the CCleaner installation is designed to gather information. The malware gathers as much information as it can regarding the host and then sends it to what the security researchers call the “C2 server”. The hackers or cyber criminal’s behind the malware infection will then review this information and try infect some of the hosts.
These payloads were aimed at some of top technology companies, some of these companies include, Microsoft, Cisco, Sony, Samsung, VMWare, Epson, D-Link and many more. The malware would aim to create a backdoor in the companies machines that it can infect. The researchers have proposed that China could be the source of the attack. They have linked some of the coding in the malware to a believed Chinese hacking group who go by the name “Group 72”.
