6 Ways to Reduce Bandwidth Consumption

As more and more companies take business operations online and an increasing number of services becoming cloud-based, it is essential that internet bandwidth be managed correctly. If you have noticed bandwidth being wasted in your office, here are six ways to reduce consumption.

1. Use a proxy cache

Every time a person visits a website, its contents are cached on a proxy server to prevent the content from being downloaded again on future visits. Many people use proxy caches as a way to speed up an internet connection by reducing delays – eased bandwidth requirements are a direct benefit of this.

2. Use a cloud throttling application

Cloud backup solutions consume a lot of bandwidth. This is not too much of a problem with small regular backups such as Office documents and PDF files; however, for initial backups of large files, bandwidth can be severely affected. A throttling application will help control usage.

3. Limit VoIP usage

VoIP (Voice-over Internet Protocol) applications such as Skype are very bandwidth-intensive and should be limited to business use only. Encourage employees to use their own smartphones for personal VoIP calls – just make sure they are not connected to the office network when they do it!

4. Find out who is using the most bandwidth

Some departments in the office are likely to use more of the internet than others are, but are they using it more heavily than they should be? Take the time to identity the heaviest internet users within the organisation and look at how they could be better organised to reduce bandwidth consumption.

5. Prevent malware threats

Malware is a constant problem for any computer user and, if allowed to infect a system, can be a huge drain on bandwidth resources. To prevent malware, you should ensure that you have Cloud Web Security active on the network. ITWiser’s exclusive cloud security service employs antivirus protection and a powerful anti-malware engine to ensure that any threats are eliminated at cloud level.

6. Implement URL content filtering

The biggest drain of all on office bandwidth is the employees. Staff using the internet for personal use is a major issue for businesses across the world, with social networking, media streaming, and gaming ranked as the biggest causes of bandwidth wastage. To reduce consumption dramatically, use Cloud Web Security to implement URL content filtering and block access to certain websites such as Facebook and YouTube. If you do have employees that require access to social media for marketing and customer service purposes, user policies per user, group or location can be created.
