Less than 50 per cent of paying ransomware targets get their files back

A recent study from the security company CyberEdge, found that for those hit by a ransomware infection the best advice is to restore from a backup. The survey which was based on a poll of information from security professionals had identified that from those who pay a ransom demand less than 50 per cent end up receiving their data back.

The report revealed that 55 per cent of the people it surveyed reported a malware infection hitting their systems in 2017.

From those impacted with ransomware 72.4 per cent could get their data back. However, most of these were companies that simply ignored the ransom demands and restored their systems with uninfected backup copies. This shows the critical importance of maintaining up-to-date offline backups. Those who paid the ransom, 49.4 per cent said they could recover their data, while 50.6 ended up losing it anyway.

CyberEdge says, “Perhaps this is more evidence that IT security has finally stopped the bleeding of rising cyberattacks,”
