Another IoT botnet has been discovered!

Researchers at security firm Trend Micro have discovered yet another IoT botnet. The botnet Persirai targets over 1000 different IP camera models. The researchers have warned that over 120,000 web connected cameras are vulnerable to this malware.

To many end users they wouldn’t realise that their devices are exposed to the internet. The hackers are using a known vulnerability to hack the cameras but this vulnerability is seldom patched. The development of this new botnet comes just weeks after the arrival of the vigilante IoT worm Hajime, this worm will block rival botnets.

Persirai is slightly different to its relatives, Persirai specifically targets IP cameras and doesn’t go after any other Internet connected devices.
